2. About the drum lessons

What is your Safeguarding policy?

The safety of all our students is our number one priority.

To protect our students and any young people who work with us, all our teachers are subject to an Enhanced DBS Check (previously known as 'CRB check'). This policy applies to all staff at The Groove Hub, without exception.

Do I need my own drum sticks?

If you have your own drum sticks we always recommend bringing these to your lesson, but if you don't have any yet we can provide a pair of sticks to use in your first lesson. Regular students will need their own drum sticks for home practice and to bring to lessons.

We can supply sticks directly to our students at a discounted cost if required. Ask us for details at your next lesson if you need a new pair of sticks!

What do I need to bring to my first drum lesson?

If you have your own drum sticks please bring these to your first lesson, we provide everything else you'll need! If you don't have your own sticks yet we can provide a pair for the first lesson.

What ages do you teach?

We teach students of all ages! From students as young as 5 to students in their 80s or above, everybody is welcome to learn drums or further their abilities on the kit.

Do you teach beginners or advanced players?

We teach players of all abilities. Whether you're a complete beginner who has never picked up a pair of sticks before, or an advanced level player, you'll be right at home here.

We pride ourselves on being able to guide our students regardless of their current playing level and ensure that we are always helping to improve your drumming skills!

Can I take lessons if I don't own a drum kit?

Absolutely! Most of our students who came to us as complete beginners did not have a drum kit to practice on at home when they first started. We can show you how to practice your lesson material at home, even if you don't have a drum kit! This means you can see how you enjoy learning to play drums before committing to buying a drum kit.

We're happy to advise all our students / parents on the best kits for your personal circumstances if you do decide to invest in a drum kit as your playing progresses.

Are all lessons 1-to-1?

Yes, all lessons are taught on a 1-to-1 basis. This allows us to tailor each lesson to the individual drummer's goals so each student can progress at their own pace.

Do I need to take notes in the lesson?

No, we take notes for you so you can focus on the lesson material being taught!

Your teacher will send all lesson notes via email, including a summary of what has been covered, a copy of all notation / sheet music and details of what should be practiced for the next lesson. This means you'll always have a clear record of what is being covered in lessons.

Can parents wait during lessons?

Absolutely and this is encouraged. Our Manchester teaching studio has a comfortable waiting area directly outside our teaching room so you are welcome to wait inside the studio whilst your child has their lesson.

Our waiting room is exclusively for the use of parents and students of The Groove Hub, so you will have private use of the space during your child's lesson time.

What will I learn?

This depends on your personal goals. We know that every student is different so we do not use a one-size-fits-all approach - every single lesson we teach is tailored to the student.

Our lessons are designed to improve your drumming skills whilst having fun and we believe the best way to do this is to make sure we are playing the music that the student enjoys the most.

Here's an idea of some of the topics we cover in lessons, if they are suitable for the student's goals:

  • - How to read notation

  • - How to play your favourite songs

  • - How to write drum parts for songs

  • - Different musical styles

  • - Hand & foot technique (from beginner to advanced)

  • - Hand & foot speed

  • - Soloing techniques

  • - Studio recording skills

3. Lesson bookings & pricing

Do I need to book a lesson time?

Yes, we only accept pre-booked lessons. Please contact us to discuss and book your preferred lesson slot.

How long are the drum lessons?

Regular lessons are available as either half hour of 1 hour sessions.

Half hour lessons are a good starting point for new students and younger students. Full hour lessons are a great option if you want to spend more time behind the kit in your lessons, giving you time to dig deeper into the topics we cover in each session.

Longer lessons for students who travel further to lessons are available on request.

Are the lessons every week?

Most of our students have weekly lessons. We find this works best for retaining information and ensuring we are always progressing.

However, there are no rules around lesson frequency. We also have students who have lessons every other week and some students who book on an ad-hoc basis when they want to tighten up their skills.

We can tailor our lessons to your schedule, so speak to us about your requirements and we can find the best solution.

How much do lessons cost?

Our lesson prices are:

Half hour: £18 | Full hour: £28

Discounts are available for block bookings.

Do you offer block booking discounts?

Yes we do! Contact us directly if you'd like to chat about a block booking discount.
